Shooting Stars Start Off 2-0 in School Day Win

In one of the greatest scoring matchups in CEBL league history, Scarborough’s Myles Powell stole the show. His franchise record 41 points and game winning three helped Scarborough to a 102-101 win, stealing the spotlight from Winnipeg’s Teddy Allen who had 33 points and eight rebounds himself.

Two years ago Jalen Harris set a CEBL single game record when he scored 45 points in a game. According to Powell who is now averaging a league high 34.5 points per game this season; that record may not stand for much longer.

“I got like three 50 balls in China. Yeah for sure, I’m gonna get that.”

Powell also chipped in 6 assists and scored 41 on an efficient 15/26 (56%) shooting.

“He’s been phenomenal for us in practice, being a leader in the locker room, showing his abilities really fast,” said Scarborough head coach Tyrell Vernon, who believes Powell’s best basketball may still be coming this summer.

Powell’s game winning three would not have been possible without a rebound and pass from Scarborough forward Akoi Yuot. Powell initially missed a difficult three before Yuot jumped over three Sea Bears, ripped the ball away and passed it back to Powell for the win. Yuot didn't score in his CEBL debut last Friday against Montreal but had a breakout game today, pouring in 15 points and nine rebounds

“He did a phenomenal job with his rebounding, his activity, keeping the basketball alive,” said Vernon.

The Sea Bears had multiple 10 point leads at different points in the game and as much as Powell was leaned on, Scarborough would not have won this game without big man Frank Mitchell.

Mitchell posted a 20 point, 14 rebound, five assist game; his second double-double in as many games. His passion gave Scarborough the spark they needed whenever the Sea Bears looked like they may pull away. The 6’8 270 pound Mitchell gave Winnipeg’s bigs fits in the paint and he let them know about it too.

“I’m a hockey player. I dont let no one punk me”

Scarborough guard Kellen Tynes posted his second consecutive four steal game, proving to be the perfect defensive guard to pair with Powell.

“Offensively, defensively, we feed off each other,” said Tynes.

The 6’3 guard provided a clutch 10 points, two rebounds and two assists on the night as well.

“I can learn things from him and he can learn things from me,” said Powell. “Watching him pick up [the offensive player] and fight over screens, it’s contagious. It makes us want to lock in and play defense as well.”

Next up: The Scarborough Shooting Stars are back in action on Thursday May 21 against the Saskatoon Mamba. Tip off at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is set for 11 am.
