Powell, Mitchell, Tynes Headline CEBL Awards

On Tuesday, the nominees for the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) Awards were announced, with Scarborough having a nominee in every single category (except for Developmental Player of the Year) as well as other possible awards on the horizon such as Coach of the Year and All-CEBL and All-Canadian nods as well.

Myles Powell is one of two candidates for the MVP, going up against Winnipeg's Teddy Allen. Powell was the catalyst behind Scarborough's record breaking 20 win campaign, leading the team in points, assists and three pointers made. His 22.9 points per game ranked third in the CEBL and his nine Target Score winners were four more than any other player in the league. Expect that stat to land Powell the Clutch Player of the Year award.

Frank Mitchell is up for both Sixth Man of the Year and Canadian Player of the Year after breaking the CEBL record in rebounds with 251. The gap between Mitchell's 251 boards and second place's 183 rebounds (68 rebounds) was a larger gap than second place and 15th place (62 rebounds). Mitchell averaged a double-double at 13.8 points and 10.5 rebounds, breaking the single game rebound record when he recorded 22 against the Brampton Honey Badgers on June 27. Mitchell has a fantastic shot at both awards, will definitely be an All-Canadian team member and possibly an All-CEBL First Team member.

Scarborough guard Kellen Tynes is up for Defensive Player of the Year. He impressively led the league in both steals per game (2.0) and total steals (49) despite only starting 11 of 24 games. He's going up against Ottawa's Alex Fudge who led the league in blocks at 40 and ranked 11th in steals with 25.  To go along with his stellar defence, Tynes averaged 7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists, giving him a solid chance to make an All-Canadian team

Coach of the Year nominees were not listed but after becoming the first coach to ever lead a team to 20 wins, you'd expect Scarborough's head coach Tyrell Vernon to be a front runner for the award. Due to the Vancouver Bandits switching coaches mid-season, Vernon's biggest opposition will likely be first year Winnipeg Sea Bears head coach Mike Raimbault, who led them to a 14-11 record and the best point differential in the CEBL.
