The U Sports guard brings elite outside shooting to Scarborough

The Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday that they have signed 6’4 guard AJ Cummings for the 2026 season.

U Sports Career

Cummings played for the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks from 2019-2023 and the Queens Gaels from 2024-25. He’s returning to the Ridgebacks for the 2026-27 season as a graduate transfer and joins the Shooting Stars on
CEBL Signing Day.

Cummings is an absolute sniper from behind the arc. At Ontario Tech he averaged 11.6 points on 37% shooting from three and at Queens averaged 11 points on 39% shooting from three. His 57% True Shooting percentage from his 2024-25 season at Queens ranked in the 91st percentile in U Sports. In the 2025 U Sports national championships, Cummings averaged 15 points on 57.1% from three over two games.

Cummings also averaged 3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.2 steals in his final season for the Gaels but it will be his floor spacing ability, low turnover rate, and ability to play without the ball that will help him transition into professional basketball. Cummings shot efficiently on a high volume of three point shots (6.2) with the Gaels without having the ball in his hands a lot (only a 9.7 usage rate) showing he’s able to find spaces on the floor to get his shot off and be a reliable outlet. He also only turned the ball over 0.9 times a game with a solid +1.3 assist to turnover ratio, showing he rarely makes mistakes with the ball.

CEBL Signing Day

Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) Signing Day replaces the CEBL Draft. Designed as a developmental opportunity for players in Canadian universities and colleges, these signings allow players to experience being pros for the first time. Through the draft, 116 student-athletes from 44 schools across Canada have been selected by CEBL clubs, a testament to the exceptional depth and calibre of Canadian university and collegiate basketball. CEBL Signing Day will continue that pathway.
