Scarborough Wins Lowest Scoring Game of CEBL Season

Shooting Stars Stay Atop the League, Move to 10-1

The Scarborough Shooting Stars defeated the Niagara River Lions 75-69 today at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The 144 point total is the lowest of any CEBL game this season which was odd considering Scarborough ranks towards the top of the league in most offensive categories. Regardless, it showed they can win a defensive battle and extend their franchise-best start, moving to 10-1.

“We’re in that time of the year where the schedule puts some pressure on us a little bit, and then now we’re integrating new players,” said Scarborough head coach Tyrell Vernon. “But we’ll be better for it.”

Those new high profile players Vernon mentioned were guard Cat Barber guard/forward Jay Scrubb. Barber has been the face of the Scarborough franchise the past three seasons and is the franchise’s all time leader in points, assists, steals, and Target Score winners. Scrubb is a former NBA second round pick and strong NBA G-League talent.

Barber has long been the lead guard in Scarborough, but Myles Powell has been the one flourishing in that role this season. The two of them didn't play on the court at the same time much this game, more so taking turns as the lead guard and initiating the offence.

“As we go, we're gonna test different lineups that work… they will play together, they’ll play off each other and they just got to be prepared for both,” said Vernon.

Powell ended the game with a game high 24 points, including drawing 8 fouls that led to 17 free throws.

“This was one of those games where I tried to find other ways to score. My three ball wasnt falling so I was just trying to get to the line, put pressure on the rim and figure it out,” said Powell. ï»¿
