Scarborough Signs NBA Experienced Guard Jay Scrubb
Former Juco-to-NBA Player Set to Make CEBL Debut
The Scarborough Shooting Stars have signed G/F Jay Scrubb, the club announced Sunday.
Scrubb was selected 55th overall by the Brooklyn Nets and immediately traded to the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2020 NBA Draft. He averaged 4.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.4 steals over 24 career NBA games from 2021-2023 for the Clippers and Orlando Magic.
Scrubb never played any higher postsecondary level of basketball above Junior College (Juco) before being drafted into the NBA. He had two successful seasons at John A. Logan college including winning the 2019 NJCAA National Player of the Year in his sophomore season before heading to the NBA.
Scrubb has spent parts of the last four seasons in the NBA G League, averaging 18.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 steals on 44.3% shooting from the field.
The Scarborough Shooting Stars currently sit atop the CEBL with a 9-1 record but one aspect of their roster that Scrubb should improve is their wing depth. Javan Johnson has been doing a fantastic job as their small forward, leading the team in minutes played and shooting the ball at one of the best clips in the entire league (3.2 3PM per game ranks fifth in the CEBL). But besides from Johnson they don’t really boast another small forward on the roster, usually playing 6’8 Akoi Yuot in that spot; despite him being more of a rebounding power forward.
Scrubb should fit in nicely off the wing with contrasting skill sets to Johnson. Scrubb is more of an attack-the-rim athletic finisher while Johnson is more of a 3 and D archetype, leaving head coach Tyrell Vernon with plenty of options.
