Shooting Stars Move to 14-2 After Defeating Cross Town Rivals

The Scarborough Shooting Stars defeated the Brampton Honey Badgers 99-95 on Sunday night in Brampton. The win moves them to 2-0 on the season against their cross town rivals and keeps Brampton 5.5 games behind them for first place with eight games to play.

If you take a look at the standings (below), Scarborough’s an outlier at 14-2. Only one other team in the league has double-digit wins and it’s a Winnipeg team that Scarborough beat in the first game of the season. With all the player movement in this league, it’s so hard to consistently stack wins.

Even though the Shooting Stars were missing four starters for the fourth straight game, playing a strong Brampton team hungry for a win after falling to Scarborough last week, and down by seven points with four and a half minutes left, the Shooting Stars somehow found a way to win.

It was a close matchup for three quarters before Brampton started to pull away in the fourth, going up 10 points with 8 minutes left. Back to back threes from Myles Powell who finished with 28 points, four rebounds and six assists cut it to 90-86 heading into Target Time. The Shooting Stars played tremendous defense in Target Time and on back to back possessions Frank Mitchell tipped in offensive rebounds for the win. It solidified Mitchell’s eighth double-double of the year as he finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Guard Kellen Tynes had the best game of his very strong season, posting 16 points, six assists and four steals. He’s tied for the CEBL lead in steals per game (2.4) and thanks to his defense, has been the perfect backcourt pairing for both Barber and Myles Powell.

To offset the losses of starters, new signing Jaden Campbell came in and scored eight points in 11 minutes. He’s played for Scarborough each of the past two seasons and joins Cat Barber, Khalil Miller and Anthony Walker as members of last year's Shooting Stars roster who have signed on this season.

Next Up: Scarborough is in Niagara to take on the River Lions at the Meridian Center on July 10. Tip off is set for 7 pm.
