Shooting Stars Inch Closer to History with Win over Montreal

The Scarborough Shooting Stars defeated the Montreal Alliance 91-87 on Sunday night at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, their third win in six days.

The victory moves the Shooting Stars record on the year to 18-4 with two games remaining. If Scarborough can win those final two games of the season next weekend in a Brampton doubleheader, they will become the first CEBL team to ever reach 20 wins (The Vancouver Bandits hold the current record, going 19-5 last season).

"We're trying to get to 20 wins but we got to do it the right way," said head coach Tyrell Vernon. 

Scarborough's win against Montreal wasn't played the exact right way that Vernon wanted, but just like Scarborough's done all year, they put themselves in a position to win it in Target Time.

Scarborough's closers have revolved around Myles Powell, Terquavion Smith and Javan Johnson all season, and with all three on the court Scarborough took an 80-76 lead into a Target Time set at 89. With the score at 88-87, Smith who was previously 3-14 from the field that day rose up for a step-back three, draining it and sending Scarborough home happy.

Scarborough saw another nice game from newly re-signed forward Michael Foster Jr as he recorded 11 points, five rebounds and two assists, playing good defence and heavy minutes in the frontcourt. This is now back to back years that Foster Jr has joined Scarborough in the final stretch.

"Last year I wanted to win badly. We went to the semifinals and lost. It's a chip on my shoulder."

Even though Scarborough has clinched the top seed in the entire CEBL, you can bet this competitive group wants these final two games in Brampton just as much as any other game.
