Scarborough Completes Canada Day Comeback
The Nail Biting Win Moves Scarborough to 12-2
The Scarborough Shooting Stars defeated the Montreal Alliance 80-78 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre on Wednesday afternoon.
The Shooting Stars are getting to a point now with their 12-2 record where you cannot doubt them no matter what the score or who is in the game. They were missing three of their top four scorers, going up against a second place Montreal team, trailing by 13 entering the fourth quarter… and still won.
“Sticking together [was key]. There were a lot of times where we could have folded but we didn’t,” said head coach Tyrell Vernon.
After scoring 90+ points in nine of their first ten games the Shooting Stars have now scored less than 90 four straight times. The good news - Scarborough is 3-1 in those games and 2-1 without CEBL MVP candidate Myles Powell in the lineup. As the season’s gone on, multiple different players have stepped up. Today, it was guard Trey Thomas who scored 22 points to go along with 3 rebounds, 4 assists, two steals and the final five points of Target Time to seal the win.
“It’s just that next man up mentality. We don’t worry about who's playing and who's not,” said Thomas. “I just stayed aggressive. I’m very confident in myself and my ability to score the ball.”
One of those next man up members was David Muenkat who was making his season debut for Scarborough. The former member of their inaugural 2022 team and member of the championship 2023 squad brings nice forward depth and scoring to the roster. Last year he posted 13.9 points and 8.3 rebounds for the Brampton Honey Badgers. Even though he’s only been here for two days, he sees comparisons between this team and the 2023 champion one.
“The chemistry. I can already tell the guys get along great. The chemistry my first two years in Scarborough was something you don't find often,” said Muenkat. “It’s good energy around the locker room [with this team] , and guys are communicating on the court.”
Next up: Scarborough is set for a Montreal rematch on Friday July 3rd at Verdun Auditorium. Tip off is set for 7:30 pm.
